Arts vs Rehab resources for practitioners.

I just found this link http://artvsrehab.com/2012/08/14/apply/ that has developing arts programmes for a variety of purposes - for example arts vs arts therapy. The main website is Arts vs. Rehab at http://artvsrehab.com. They look interesting for practitioners and might even give some ideas of professional artefacts in Module 3? They might also be useful for planning in Module 2.

Can people have a look and see what your think?

Joining in the fun - LEAVE COMMENTS PLEASE

Hello everyone - Remember how time flies on this course! I have been trying to touch base with people this week and would encourage everyone to do the same. Start some conversations!

Here is an easy one for Module 1 - have you sent your blog address to me? I have been putting up addresses today under the BAPP Blogs tab.

Module 2 - Have you had a look at the Handbook and Reader 4 to start you off? Ahmet Ahmet wrote a good icebreaker blog that you might want to check out - also Afi Agyeman and Jo Clarke

Module 3 - Ah Charlotte Bidston has been letting us know where she is in her process doing interviews - those crafty taping devices sometimes have a life of their own - I always used 2 devices where possible for longer or important interviews. ALSO Jessica Hay  and of course Corinda had already found Henley and Katharina has some good suggestions for gathering literature.

MANY more that I will add - PLEASE leave some comments to suggest others to explore!

Module 3 - getting connected with SIGs and work colleagues

This blog is especially for those in Module 3.

As you may have noted I am using some of my blogs this first week for my own PGCHE work, and I will hopefully be following the conversations with several individuals in more depth. The point of my 'tutor' blogs is to help others do a great job this study period.

One of the things that I would like to point out to everyone in Module 3 is the importance of using your peers in the BAPP Arts network and at work as way to discuss and perhaps clarify your thinking about your chosen topics. There are a number of learning outcomes that relate to doing this:

CS2 - Indicate how your reflection on the inquiry work is being used in your various communities of practice and how it has developed the thinking about your own practice.
PS2 - Actively participate in and be able to evidence your effective use of blogs and SIG(s) as well as using the interaction with external professionals, peers and academic networks to influence your inquiry.
PES1 - Evaluate your learning progression through your public blogs and private learning journals, including how your learning has been used in your professional role(s) and workplace (Middlesex University, 2011 – Module 3 Handbook, p. 3).

Right some advice on doing this...

1. Reinitiate any helpful connections you made in Module 2 if you have not been using these in the summer months to inform your topic. Now is the time to put updates on your blogs and use Facebook and LinkedIn groups (or direct contact with others through Skype or email etc.) to see where your inquires have taken you and to get together with others to rehearse your 'arguments' for telling others about your inquiry in your Critical Review. Remember to do screenshots or copy and past conversations that are helpful to you.

It is also interesting that a number of BAPP Arts learners have talked about others (Alumni) who have taken the course and can be used as mentors for your current work - any good examples to share with others?

2. Have some conversations with colleagues in your workplace - think about these in your journal - and add these discussions publicly through your blog (anonymised perhaps?) or privately through your journal extracts - to discuss your thinking and analysis. Critical Thinking is also when you allow experts from your literature to challenge or support your points of view, you should put this consideration of expertise in the drafts you might have already started for your critical review.

3. Reflect upon your own practice - much or this programme is about using the cycle of learning (e.g. Kolb) to consider things, make things happen and then improve your professional practice through reflection. So reflect about feedback from last term and the way in which you have added to or changed what you are doing to evidence this reflection. Your reflection will be a part of what is assessed at the end of Module 3.

The twelve week period can go very quickly - so starting now to think through difficult questions is appropriate. I am there to help. Also remember there is a self-deferral system working in our course, so please get together with you academic adviser to discuss changes to your circumstances.

The topics that people choose can make a difference and are therefore extremely interesting to be a part of for tutors! What you say about your work comes from your experience and is a part of your working life. Use your peers as a way of thinking through Module 3 now and in a few weeks time when you have completed more of the activity. Finally, past learners have left up some good examples of inquiries to share with you, so you can also go these past blogs for inspiration and sources of knowledge and understanding!

Arts in the school curriculum

I often read the online papers in the morning and found this article that might be of interest to some of you gathering literature for Module, or of interest to any of us...

Nick Serota, head of the Tate, has commented on the needs to keep arts in the school curriculum in an article by Burns (2012) for the BBC.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-19743066

These comments are in response to the new 'English Baccalaureate Certificate' (EBC) and referred to a report on arts teaching by Darren Henley on 'Cultural Education in England' from the Department for Education (2012).

This report can be downloaded form the Department for Education site https://www.education.gov.uk/publications/standard/publicationDetail/Page1/DFE-00019-2012

The report was commissioned by the Department for Culture Media and Sport, and will most likely operate to inform public education policy so may be worth a read if you are on a public teaching pathway.  Just to note - following the  links I have now saved this report on my desktop and also added a reference (I add comments using Adobe - but if not make not somewhere else) about the web address and the date I saved it is the (Henley, 2012, p. 23).

Another Guardian article explaining the report:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/culture-professionals-network/culture-professionals-blog/2012/feb/29/henley-review-cultural-education

I know people have felt the Robinson report (1999) on education has been a powerful advocate for cultural education. How does this report compare to that report?

Welcome back everyone. If you are like me it make take a few blogs to get up to speed after a summer of many changes. Please look at the BAPP Arts Libguide - we are located in Hendon now! I also made a move and live in London SE4 - so a much better commute for those who have had shaky train conversations with me over the years. I got to do my PGCHE over the sumer as well - and am still finishing it up by using my first week of blogs as a teaching observation! especially with those now on Module 3. A reminder that we are now in the School of Media and Performing Arts and share an office with those with Media and Dance and Performance are now in Ravensfield at Hendon.

One of the last things I did in early September was present a case study of BAPP Arts at the Designs in ELearning Conference at the University of Arts in London. I also have an edition of 30 prints due by 1st November - so I am nervous about making this happen. The theme of the print - I think it is my take on language and web 2.0 - but as I only have a few idea sketches out - watch this space.

A big thanks to Corinda who has sent me some wonderful pictures of her work with the Paralympics for my Induction presentation! What a great event this summer!

All the best - start blogging - looking - phoning - skyping - thinking - drawing - taking moving images - researching - and making plans for how all the work will be done!

Good luck to everyone this week for Induction and the 'study period' starts in earnest on 1st of October. Please look at the Libguide for directions to the Hendon campus.
