Shocking! This ethical practice also reminds me of the idea of 'peer pressure ' and being influenced by the 'norm' or by what we are pressured into doing. I am surprised that so few teachers rebelled, they of all people should have a natural instinct of care and responsibility for others!
Yes, when I took a course on research ethics the tutor showed some film footage of the experiment, it was shocking. It is a classic of what not to do with human subjects. We don't do 'experiments' in our inquiries but we can read about research that carries out experiments, especially in psychology.
I can't believe this. Do we put too much trust in our leaders? Maybe we presume that because our bosses are above us they understand that the outcome of what we are doing (even if it goes against our views or would be wrong if we were doing it) is for the greater good in the long term when in fact it isn't!
