Introduction:
Using
Summon to find resources for assignments
In this practical session,
you will learn how to find and reference ebooks and journal articles:
·
We
will use reflective practice and leadership as a subject area to search on
·
Please
follow the steps provided below
·
Please
ask, as we go along, if you need any help / have any questions!
Step 1: Go to Summon
2 minutes
· Open up a browser ( Firefox or Google Chrome)
· Login to myUniHub
· Click on the My Study tab
· Go to the My Library box
· Click on Summon
Step 2: Finding ebooks using Summon
10 minutes
· Search using the keywords reflective
practice
· Refine your results in the left-hand column as
follows:
o Full Text Online
o Book / eBook
o Publication Date: 2010 -
· Try accessing a couple of the books in your results (click on the
title and see if you can read them online)
· Go back to the Summon tab and click on the sign to the right of the two books that you
have looked at.
This should add them
to a temporary folder at the top of the page:
· We will come back to this
temporary folder later on!
Step 3: Finding journal articles using Summon
10 mins
· Add the term leadership to
your search box (so you now have reflective
practice leadership)
If you want to change these search terms to
improve the search / make it more specific or search for something else…Please
feel free to do so
· Click on Search
· Refine your search again (some of these filters will already
be set):
o
Full Text Online
o Scholarly & Peer-Review
o
Journal
Article (click on
Book / eBook to remove it as a filter)
o
Publication Date: 2010 – present (click
and drag left-hand button to change dates)
· Try accessing a couple of articles:
o
Click on the title and, on the following
screen, click on the PDF / Full Text link
o
Try to save the PDFs onto your desktop
· Go back to the Summon tab and click on the sign to the right of the two articles that you
have looked at
This should add them
to a temporary folder at the top of the page:
Step 4: Referencing
10 mins
· Click on the temporary folder icon
· Change the Citation Format to Harvard and email the 4 references to
yourself
· Leave the Summon tab open but go back to the myUniHub tab /
page
· Click on My Study
· Go to the My Library box and click on Referencing
· Click on the Cite Them Right Online link
on the right-hand side of the page
· Cite Them Right provides the University’s standard formatting for
Harvard.
This may be slightly different to the Harvard
format(s) that you find elsewhere…for example from Summon. Cite Them Right
is the correct format.
· To find the appropriate reference in Cite Them Right, click on the
tabs on the toolbar at the top of the page.
· Compare the references you have in Summon with the format provided
in Cite Them Right. Are they the same? What are the differences?
Step 5: Support
5 mins
· Go back to the myUniHub tab / page
· Click on My Study
· Go to the My Library box and click on Library
Subject Guides
· Click on Work Based Learning
and go to the Work Based Learning guide
This is a really good place to find other
resources that you can use!
· Click on ‘Your Librarians’ - A great place to ask for help
If you need any help after
this induction, please feel free to email me at:
