Trying out the BAPP Art Meeting Room on Adobe connect/ breeze

Bapp arts meeting room trial 28.9.15 from Paula Nottingham

A trial recording of the session - with permission

ALSO

Paul from CAPE has added some advice when using non-uni Macs:

Hi Paula,

I’ve asked a couple of my Mac using colleagues to test this out and they have no problems with the add-in at all – when they click on it the add-in installs and reloads the meeting room automatically. We can’t seem to recreate the problem as Adobe Flash Player is allowed by default on our machines. We’re not sure why it isn’t enabled by default on yours. If Adobe Flash Player is blocked by your own settings you’ll have problems with some other websites as well. My colleague suggests switching to Firefox when using a Mac – hopefully this or Chrome will be set up properly and get around the problems.

Regards,

Paul Smith

Module 1 - new technologies and the web - articles and ideas

The news now reports on the advances/changes to technology that talks about new devices that have just been invented, how people use them with Web 2.0, and the commercial services providing them...

Should we be up on all this as professionals?

How have technologies changed in the last few years and has it affected the way that you work?

some examples:

an article on how searches will work in future - mobile phone technology - I just got a new phone with Siri - so I can verbally ask it for google searches.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-34351458

generational usage of social media - an editorial like article - but do people really move when things become too crowded?

will add to this post in the upcoming week...
any other suggestions in comments welcomed...

Returning to studies - thanks everyone who participated in sessions - some advice from the collective!

Thanks again for everyone who participated in the induction sessions and the orientation sessions and now the breeze BAPP Arts Meeting Room sessions...

Thanks for sharing and the helpful questions.

A summary in brief:

Starting off after a break from studies - advice - look at the new materials/handbooks/MyUnihub links

Module 1 - the handbook has tasks to assist you - the first one is about the blog and creating a blog 'CV' or identity - remember that you do not have to put up person information that is on your professional CV - this is for your blog...

Look on the others blogs for their beginning blogs...

Module 2 - start with Handbooks - and now you do not have to know what you are going to do as a professional inquiry t the beginning of the module.

Module 3 - start with the update to send to your adviser (tutor) - writing this up now will help you find out where you are and often you can use this writing later on....

Check the calendar that is up on this blog and up on MyLearning BA Professional Practice Arts (135W99X) and put these in your diary. Final submission is the 7th January. Discuss self-deferrals with your academic tutor...
there are suggestions for formative feedback in the handbooks and at least one written feedback before you submit.
Peter Thomas slides and video up on your module site - talking about writing. Other folders should link you with university resources.
In the Library use Summon to search and the Library Guides to help explore your area of interest.

Suggestions from participants:

don't panic!
read your handbook
start wither blog - what did you do over the summer?
re-engage with SIGs check blogs regularly
don't be scared to connect with people
write down dates in your diary
re-direct you  university email
remember and put somewhere your IT user name and password - UniHelp if not working
Paul and Sid WBL@mdx.ac.uk to help with student cards

It might be time to book a tutorial with your adviser (this year we are using the term academic tutor).

I will be sending out the sharing list soon via email and will add the Skype addresses used for these sessions.

Check Adesola's and others people's blogs about advice and experiences!!! Comment and add to the conversation...
This summer was my first time in New Hampshire - by the lakes.

Championing the MDX Library - very important to your studies!

The Induction conversations have been great - nice to chat with everyone who is new to the course. If you do have any questions get in touch.

Remember I am trying out a new BAPP Arts Meeting Room on breeze on Monday the 28th http://breeze.mdx.ac.uk/bapparts/ - at 11am at 3pm or at 8pm - poke the button if you want to come in with user name and password but you can come in as a guest as well. It is just to try it out - everyone always asks - 'what are we doing the first day of term?' also as suggested in Induction talks - work on your blogs...

Championing the MDX Library - very important to your studies!

We have a number of people who support your studies. This is a blended course so you are invited to use the Hendon Library at a distance and in person... we went in on Monday to have a look. photocopying is now free and you can sign out a computer on the day if you do not have your laptop - bring your own earphones to listen to DVDs - you can watch DVDs in the library and sign them out if you will be back soon. Jamie suggested if you have a book you want to read to reserve it if you are coming from a distance to make sure it is there the day you come. The Performing Arts section bro books is on the first floor - other sections are also handy like cultural studies, education, management - signs are easy to follow.

When I was studying at University of Surrey - I used to come in for study days when I could - I found it useful - takes a bit of planning - today the online provision is much better than when I studied there BUT I would encourage you to make use of the library resources online and in person (if possible) during our time together.

Paul and Sid are getting your university student cards (different than the NUS card) - remember to bring them on the day you come to Hendon as yo will need a student card to get into the library.

Also - don't forget SCONOL http://www.sconul.ac.uk/sconul-access which allows yo to go into other university libraries with your MDX student id.

Look on the module sites for more help accessing the library and other learning resources!

in the performing arts section
audio-visual resources
We might be getting a new librarian assigned to the IWBL - but we are really lucky to now have Jamie and Sian helping out as we start the year - both online and in person!
