BBC article on eroding memory! Yes I knew I was loosing it somehow! - with a bit of a review of the literature and Harvard referencing

I look at the BBC pretty much everyday - but I did connect with article about using digital technology

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-34454264

whose byline is "An over-reliance on using computers and search engines is weakening people's memories, according to a study."

Digital dependence 'eroding human memory'

By Sean CoughlanEducation correspondent
My critique?
Well I was really taken by the notion of this happening - it scared me because I have noticed that I too go online instead of 'remembering' things. Is this just a habit? That thought actually made me think that I could do something about this by not being over-reliant on my mobile to tell me things I know!
As many of these articles do - I was told that "Kaspersky Lab," had done a study - and they quote a Dr. Wimber - I looked  the key words Kapersky lab dr. timber and found this link https://blog.kaspersky.com/files/2015/06/005-Kaspersky-Digital-Amnesia-19.6.15.pdfwhich is an executive summary of the report so more useful as a source - oh by the way - this source is a lb that sell cyber security http://www.kaspersky.com/about s I would look into that too - why are they researching this topic?the byline of this report is

THE RISE AND IMPACT OF DIGITAL AMNESIA Why we need to protect what we no longer remember
So this is what the company does and perhaps is why they funded the research. Quite interesting - so I would look more into 'digital amnesia' as they call it - but I am still taken with the idea!

Harvard referencing you ask?
Try the university's Cite Them Right site to check http://www.citethemrightonline.comyou can also access with your IT user name and password - say you are form Middlesex University.
so after checking... I looked up the key words : newspaper article online
this is what cite them right said - by the way I have indented this using the quotation mark symbol up in the tools... this indicates it is form someone else - when doing this you don't use quotation marks
this said:
Where the author (byline) of a newspaper article is identified, use the following citation order:
  • Author/byline
  • Year of publication (in round brackets)
  • Title of article (in single quotation marks)
  • Title of newspaper (in italics – capitalise first letter of each word in title, except for linking words such as and, of, the, for)
  • Edition if required (in round brackets)
  • Day and month
  • Page reference

Helpful - but I still was not sure - so I went to a favourite site that I tell others about which is easy to use...

the Anglia Ruskin Harvard site

http://libweb.anglia.ac.uk/referencing/harvard.htm

that said:

For newspaper articles found in online newspapers, the required elements for a reference are:
Author or corporate author, Year. Title of document or page. Name of newspaper, [type of medium] additional date information. Available at: [Accessed date].
Chittenden, M., Rogers, L. and Smith, D., 2003. Focus: 'Targetitis ails NHS. Times Online, [online]1 June. Available at:
[Accessed 17 March 2005].
Coney, J., 2009. Is this the start of a new home loan war HSBC vows to lend £1billion to homebuyers with 10% deposits. Daily Mail, [online] (Last updated 9.47 AM on 09th April 2009). Available at:
[Accessed on 20 April 2009].
An intext reference for the above examples would read:
(Chittenden, et al. 2003)
(Coney, 2009)

It is good practice to keep in your files a copy of the first page of any web pages you use"

so I have decided to reference this way - and will do so for all other online newspaper articles!

Coughlan, Sean (2015) 'Digital dependence 'eroding human memory', British Broadcasting Company [online] (Last updated 7 October 2015). Available on http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-34454264 [Accessed on 9 October 2015]

1st campus session sign-up for 13th October 1pm - 4pm at Hendon - please RSVP as a comment on this blog.

Topic of 1st campus session:  Considering agency and reflection as a ‘catalyst for change’

This session is for anyone (all modules) who would like to attend and explores a few concepts that are in all of the modules.

  •        What do you want to change?
  •        How does the idea of ‘agency’ relate to your arts practice?
  •        How can reflection add to this process?

Personal ‘agency’ is related to the capacity of someone to be actively involved in what they do, making changes and perhaps even experiencing a transformative process (Mezirow, 1981). The idea of professional ‘agency’ takes this idea further.

Often we initiate change through identifying areas of practice to alter/enhance/challenge! Ghaye describes reflection as a ‘catalyst for change’ (2005) and certainly reflection can be pivotal for enhancing practice.

Sometimes change comes about through networking or dissemination. Ruth (in conversation) described this as a ‘chain-reaction’.

  • Does this connect to the ideas you are developing on the BA (Hons) Professional Practice in Arts in some way?

For the first 20-30 minutes there will be a presentation about the ideas involved in ‘change’, ‘agency’ and “reflection as a catalyst for change’ to introduce the topic. Discussion and activities will follow. After this, people on individual modules will have the opportunity to talk to others who are doing that module, and we can discuss individuals' work.

The session is on the 13th of October at the Hendon campus approximately 3 hours from 1-4pm with a coffee break. Please meet at the main Reception at 1pm.

Please RSVP in the comments of this blog if you can come to any or all of the session, or get in touch with Paula on her mobile phone on the day if you can make it...
