Topic of 1st campus session: Considering agency and
reflection as a ‘catalyst for change’
This
session is for anyone (all modules) who would like to attend and explores a few
concepts that are in all of the modules.
- What do you want to
change?
- How does the idea of
‘agency’ relate to your arts practice?
- How can reflection add to
this process?
Personal
‘agency’ is related to the capacity of someone to be actively involved in what
they do, making changes and perhaps even experiencing a transformative process
(Mezirow, 1981). The idea of professional ‘agency’ takes this idea further.
Often
we initiate change through identifying areas of practice to alter/enhance/challenge!
Ghaye describes reflection as a ‘catalyst for change’ (2005)
and certainly reflection can be pivotal for enhancing practice.
Sometimes
change comes about through networking or dissemination. Ruth (in conversation) described
this as a ‘chain-reaction’.
- Does this connect to the
ideas you are developing on the BA (Hons) Professional Practice in Arts in some
way?
For
the first 20-30 minutes there will be a presentation about the ideas involved
in ‘change’, ‘agency’ and “reflection as a catalyst for change’ to introduce
the topic. Discussion and activities will follow. After this, people on individual
modules will have the opportunity to talk to others who are doing that module,
and we can discuss individuals' work.
The
session is on the 13th of October at the Hendon campus approximately
3 hours from 1-4pm with a coffee break. Please meet at the main Reception at 1pm.
Please
RSVP in the comments of this blog if you can come to any or all of the session, or get in touch with Paula on her mobile phone on the day if you can make it...
