the end of the week

It is a good question for those working round the clock - when does you week end?

Studying while working is hard and the time goes quickly during the study period - almost like it is accelerated...

Take a deep breadth - chill for a few minutes as time allows - make some lists if there is enough energy in you hand to scrawl some words.

It is hard to get sense of the movement on the course unless you take a pause - so thinking of fast moving cliches...
http://blog.landesk.com/en/end-users-shadow-it/
or the ones about roller coasters...

https://forum.rollercoastertycoon.com/showthread.php?3615-More-realistic-roller-coaster-support-beams

and then think of some positive images!!  We were talking about these this week in some of the discussions... there are some great new photos going up on Flickr!

So a few more to add to these

This one caught my eye - love the vibrancy colour and of the frightening expanse of the 'leap'.

Richard Branson's site!

Everyone - I hope you have some 'end of the week' time this week whenever you schedule permits!

Module 3 thinking creatively about it all

The other night was not a good time for anyone so let's reschedule - you can comment on this blog or the one announcing the session to suggest some dates and times and I will get back to everyone!

Here are some slides that I have revisited that might help you in your process for the inquiry...

This is a long slideshare - packed with advice - but you might want to look at the place where you are now and then return to other aspects - think of a movie you watch in chapters or browse through like netflix - everyone is at slightly different stages.

It will be here for you when you need it!
4 main points
1. work creatively- this is your practice
2. depending on what stage you are -(refer to the arrow diagram) you can star writing up you critical review
3. your analysis depends on what you did for your practitioner research - but what did your find out? and how did that relate to your inquiry questions?
4. there artefact - you might be able to start planning how you will communicate your inquiry to your professional audience /community of practice now

Please add other questions in the comments!!!

Here are a few blogs to note:

Module 2 ethics and planning the inquiry

A great session the other night! Please add comments and questions to link the discussion! Lara, Granger, Jessica, Ellie, and Tom attended this particular session so I will link blogs as they come up and there is a fair amount on the blogs and emerging SIGs.

The discussion we had about the kinds of professional ethics and practitioner research ethics that were in the inquiry planning - also about the forms that need to be filled out.

We also talk about questions people had and that were popping up on the SIGs (and about SIGs!).

Jessica has been talking about ethics on her blog http://jessicaplant.blogspot.co.uk

as has Lisa http://lisameiklejohn.blogspot.co.uk

Katy is talking about SIGs http://katythorpe2012.blogspot.co.uk/2015/10/sig-group-on-facebook.html

aas has Granger http://gjswittering.blogspot.co.uk

Final 28.10.15 m2 bapp arts ethical practice from Paula Nottingham

Here are some of the questions that hopefully the slideshare will help with...

What from the Reader 5 might be useful to apply it the planning? - scan the Reader and use it for thinking through some very complex issues -  then relate some of this thinking to what you want to find out about and the people that might be involve n that inquiry.

What kinds of ethical  procedures and advice was needed? - e.g. the idea that the inquiry was not supposed to be 'covert' - so what permissions were need form the workplace and from other individuals? e.g. permission form gatekeepers and informed consent forms planned for professionals - also BERA https://www.bera.ac.uk/researchers-resources/publications/ethical-guidelines-for-educational-research-2011 - working with children under 16 needs special consideration and parental permissions - is it already a part of your workplace role and could it be 'captured' in your journal? It might be more appropriate to focus on practitioners in your workplace/community of practice?

How can you carry out research without 'twisting' the results? Interpretation of what you find out from people and analysis of this 'data' is important to consider - Reader 6 spells some of this out.

How much does the code of professional practice in your area affect what you ned to plan? e.g. professional organisations like Equity might provide guidance when thinking about professional codes of practice.

Reflective practice Module 1

Reflective practice with networking module 1 26.10.15 from Paula Nottingham

Added bit - the 11:30 repeat session was also a lot of fun talking shop...

http://jessboswell.blogspot.co.uk/2015/10/wed-28th-oct-online-session-task-2a.html

http://lilygrundy95.blogspot.co.uk/2015/10/bapp-task-2a-reflective-practice.html

The 8pm Session was attended by Nafisah, Ami Sophie Zoe Darren and Nicole (sorry we lost you when we moved to Skype!) please look at their blogs and comment. The breeze site works okay for some times /places but the sound was not right - we need to figure out the recipe for the perfect connection! I will go back to Louise - but then the Skype lost souls as well - it sometimes feels like a ship with people going overboard! Unfortunately my computer is having problems with the headphones - but I am now looking for solutions!

We are redoing the session on Wed at 11:30 am - maybe better connection times with less people at home online?  I think I will call another experimental one to work out the kinks... so watch this space for this to blast out the cobwebs. I have not managed to tape yet so - I have transcribed the discussion from notes.

Good discussion/questions on this part of Module 1 included - not sure if all of this is in the right order!

Discussion about connecting up with the ideas form Reader 2 - Sophie said the Kottcamp's in action strategies useful - especially working with changes that come making quick changes at work - that the ability to work 'in action' builds up.

Ami talked about not being just one type of learner (Honey and Mumford) but that being a freelance teaching and performer meant adjust to the different areas of practice.

Zoe said that that was similar and talked about her experience being observed while 'teaching' and learning form the feedback - she mentioned the VAK (none of could remember the source!) and we moved into multiple intelligences (Gardner - remember his name ). Both of these are mentioned in schools as learning approaches so are good to know...

We began taking about the Reader - and starting up the reflective journal - Nafish said she was okay with using a journal - and we all discussed others ways of putting things into journals like mind mapping, pictures and drawing/doodles. We began talking about some examples - perhaps practitioners - who might help us reflect and Nafisah mentioned going to see Kahn at Sadler's well s and his use of his own reflection to link together his choreography and performance (also Misty Copeland). Sophie mentioned her blog about the book 'Secret' used to visualise practice.

We talked about the writing exercises from the Reader 2 and the campus session - e.g. the use of continuous writing to get thoughts out - we mentioned the use of the unconscious and the automatic - and Ami likened to some exercises she had done with stream of consciousness when doing her acting training. I struggle often to write... Nafisah likened this reflective practice to putting together smaller 'kinetic' movements (like small reflective passages) - so a Chrysalis dance company exercise of starting with body parts with blue plasters - and ending up with large movement phrases. Music allowed Nafisah to 'think on her feet' - reflection in action.

Very good session - links to be added - Ami will talk more about using the stream of consciousness in choreography, Zoe about the stream of consciousness and the use of doodling, drawing and finding images for her journal, Sophie will take on the Boud reflective exercise (a good one!), and Nafisah will think about the stream of consciousness and blog about how some of her influential practitioners used reflective practice to do they creative work and to developers practitioners (performers).

I also remembered that Alan used to link to the ideas of Ted Robinson for creative teaching in schools - so here is what he is up to today!
http://www.theguardian.com/books/2015/apr/23/creative-schools-revolutionising-education-from-the-ground-up-ken-robinson-lou-aronica-review

We also mentioned using automatic drawing - I use it for my journal work - I like this site that liken it to yoga!! what a great thought!!

Campus Session 1: Considering ‘reflective practice as a catalyst for change’

Suggestions from the session !
try writing a memoir - start writing for 5 minutes and don't stop - write about one of your experiences from the past or present... then look at the writing and pick out some of the key words to look up after this (maybe some concept words) or more subject specific words that you need to define using 'literature'.

Please check out what others have said about the session and make comments:

Final all module campus session 1 13.10.15 from Paula Nottingham

Then try a 'head start' this is drawing a head - your head or an alter ego - and just putting what you are thinking about for the moment - to capture this- then you can extend some of the thinking if you want to - often ideas or concept are a part of the thinking that emerges - let you automatic unconscious help - that is - don't try to manufacture ideas jut let them flow...
My 'alter ego' (Irini's phrase)  head with my thoughts during the workshop.
Please comment if you have any helpful suggestions for reflective practice or a story to tell!

Listening and doing

My take on the 2nd week meetings hosted by Adesola was the importance of listening to others and or then taking that discussion into actions.

Listening takes time - I remember long ago taking a course for giving careers advice - and one of the important lesson from that was not to fear silence! let others speak - you don't have to fill the space continually with your voice (not sure I am that good at that - and coming from the US means talking/revealing is a cultural trait that i need to consider in Europe). Silence allows others to speak.

Action - sometimes - with all the best intentions (like this blog) we get delayed into doing things - usually because we are busy but also the arts proclivities for procrastination and perfectionism!! Writing down an action plan - I have a things to do list - means that the conversation/discussion leads to actions that are useful - so sharing and then taking some of the ideas and doing something about them in your own way - even if it is writing a blog about it!

BBC article on eroding memory! Yes I knew I was loosing it somehow! - with a bit of a review of the literature and Harvard referencing

I look at the BBC pretty much everyday - but I did connect with article about using digital technology

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-34454264

whose byline is "An over-reliance on using computers and search engines is weakening people's memories, according to a study."

Digital dependence 'eroding human memory'

By Sean CoughlanEducation correspondent
My critique?
Well I was really taken by the notion of this happening - it scared me because I have noticed that I too go online instead of 'remembering' things. Is this just a habit? That thought actually made me think that I could do something about this by not being over-reliant on my mobile to tell me things I know!
As many of these articles do - I was told that "Kaspersky Lab," had done a study - and they quote a Dr. Wimber - I looked  the key words Kapersky lab dr. timber and found this link https://blog.kaspersky.com/files/2015/06/005-Kaspersky-Digital-Amnesia-19.6.15.pdfwhich is an executive summary of the report so more useful as a source - oh by the way - this source is a lb that sell cyber security http://www.kaspersky.com/about s I would look into that too - why are they researching this topic?the byline of this report is

THE RISE AND IMPACT OF DIGITAL AMNESIA Why we need to protect what we no longer remember
So this is what the company does and perhaps is why they funded the research. Quite interesting - so I would look more into 'digital amnesia' as they call it - but I am still taken with the idea!

Harvard referencing you ask?
Try the university's Cite Them Right site to check http://www.citethemrightonline.comyou can also access with your IT user name and password - say you are form Middlesex University.
so after checking... I looked up the key words : newspaper article online
this is what cite them right said - by the way I have indented this using the quotation mark symbol up in the tools... this indicates it is form someone else - when doing this you don't use quotation marks
this said:
Where the author (byline) of a newspaper article is identified, use the following citation order:
  • Author/byline
  • Year of publication (in round brackets)
  • Title of article (in single quotation marks)
  • Title of newspaper (in italics – capitalise first letter of each word in title, except for linking words such as and, of, the, for)
  • Edition if required (in round brackets)
  • Day and month
  • Page reference

Helpful - but I still was not sure - so I went to a favourite site that I tell others about which is easy to use...

the Anglia Ruskin Harvard site

http://libweb.anglia.ac.uk/referencing/harvard.htm

that said:

For newspaper articles found in online newspapers, the required elements for a reference are:
Author or corporate author, Year. Title of document or page. Name of newspaper, [type of medium] additional date information. Available at: [Accessed date].
Chittenden, M., Rogers, L. and Smith, D., 2003. Focus: 'Targetitis ails NHS. Times Online, [online]1 June. Available at:
[Accessed 17 March 2005].
Coney, J., 2009. Is this the start of a new home loan war HSBC vows to lend £1billion to homebuyers with 10% deposits. Daily Mail, [online] (Last updated 9.47 AM on 09th April 2009). Available at:
[Accessed on 20 April 2009].
An intext reference for the above examples would read:
(Chittenden, et al. 2003)
(Coney, 2009)

It is good practice to keep in your files a copy of the first page of any web pages you use"

so I have decided to reference this way - and will do so for all other online newspaper articles!

Coughlan, Sean (2015) 'Digital dependence 'eroding human memory', British Broadcasting Company [online] (Last updated 7 October 2015). Available on http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-34454264 [Accessed on 9 October 2015]

1st campus session sign-up for 13th October 1pm - 4pm at Hendon - please RSVP as a comment on this blog.

Topic of 1st campus session:  Considering agency and reflection as a ‘catalyst for change’

This session is for anyone (all modules) who would like to attend and explores a few concepts that are in all of the modules.

  •        What do you want to change?
  •        How does the idea of ‘agency’ relate to your arts practice?
  •        How can reflection add to this process?

Personal ‘agency’ is related to the capacity of someone to be actively involved in what they do, making changes and perhaps even experiencing a transformative process (Mezirow, 1981). The idea of professional ‘agency’ takes this idea further.

Often we initiate change through identifying areas of practice to alter/enhance/challenge! Ghaye describes reflection as a ‘catalyst for change’ (2005) and certainly reflection can be pivotal for enhancing practice.

Sometimes change comes about through networking or dissemination. Ruth (in conversation) described this as a ‘chain-reaction’.

  • Does this connect to the ideas you are developing on the BA (Hons) Professional Practice in Arts in some way?

For the first 20-30 minutes there will be a presentation about the ideas involved in ‘change’, ‘agency’ and “reflection as a catalyst for change’ to introduce the topic. Discussion and activities will follow. After this, people on individual modules will have the opportunity to talk to others who are doing that module, and we can discuss individuals' work.

The session is on the 13th of October at the Hendon campus approximately 3 hours from 1-4pm with a coffee break. Please meet at the main Reception at 1pm.

Please RSVP in the comments of this blog if you can come to any or all of the session, or get in touch with Paula on her mobile phone on the day if you can make it...
